Gibbons Style Session Rail Jam To Cap Off The World Ski & Snowboard Festival

On the heels of the news that the always stoke-inducing big air competition was a no-go at this year’s World Ski & Snowboard Festival, the good people at Gibbons Whistler (purveyors of endless good times and owners/operators of some of the finest watering holes in Whistler) stepped in, and gave the proverbial finger wag to the thought of there being no ski/snowboard event on the final night of WSSF. The result of the fruits of their labour? The Gibbons Style Session, an all-encompassing, high-flying rail jam that will see top notch, big name skiers and snowboarders join forces in a jam format, team-based competition this Saturday night. Needless to say, it’s going to be a time, so if you’re planning or thinking of being in Whistler this weekend, make like Nike and just do it.

GIBBONS STYLE SESSION IS BRINGING TOGETHER SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS DURING WSSF

WHISTLER, BC – April 11, 2016 - Gibbons Whistler is the title sponsor for the Gibbons Style Session, a team format ski and snowboard rail jam to be held April 16th, 2016 at 9:15 p.m. during the World Ski & Snowboard Festival (WSSF). This contest will pair up a skier and a snowboarder into a team of two. Teams will session a feature at the same time, be scored as individuals, then combine their scores for an overall team total. The contest will take place in Skier’s Plaza immediately following Chromeo’s DJ Set on the Fido Main Stage

Twenty world-class ski and snowboard athletes have been invited to participate in the event, and spectators should expect to see some of their favourite top Canadian and Whistler-based athletes in the mix. Each invited athlete has been given the opportunity to choose his or her own teammate; the only rule is that chosen partners be the same gender, and of the opposite sport. This format has not been seen in a competition of this caliber before. In total there will be forty athletes, in twenty teams of two, working together to win an $8000.00 cash prize that will be awarded to the top men’s and women’s teams. With an equal amount of men and women competing on the same course Gibbons Whistler felt that it was essential to award equal prize money to men and women. Why? Because it’s 2016.

Whistler Blackcomb is building a progressive rail feature that will allow athletes to focus on style and session it together. The current world of freestyle ski and snowboard competition is dominated by athletes pushing to land bigger and more technical tricks. The Gibbons Style Session aims to encourage athletes to solely focus on style and creativity.

On Saturday, April 16th, 2016, Gibbons Whistler will put on the inaugural Gibbons Style Session in front of the WSSF crowd. Gibbons Whistler is excited to be supporting a progressive event in the heart of Whistler Village. Joey Gibbons, President of Gibbons Whistler, said “I am happy we are being given the opportunity to keep celebrating our most popular winter sports at the base of Whistler Mountain. For most of my life this has been an incredible community evening event and it's awesome to see it continue. We have lots of exciting stuff going on in Whistler but at the end of the day I feel it's important to remember and celebrate what put us on the map, mountain sports! A Huge thank you to the team at Whistler Blackcomb, Sue and the WSSF crew for collaborating on this innovative event."
