Whitewater Ski Resort’s Smith Jr Freeride Open
Whitewater Ski Resort is stoked to host the 13th Annual Smith Jr Freeride Open this weekend, from January 9th-12th, 2025. This premier competition invites the next generation of skiers and riders from British Columbia, Alberta, and the Pacific Northwest to showcase their big mountain freeriding skills.

Following the tremendous success of last year’s event, where snowboarding was introduced for the first time, the competition has been rebranded as the Jr Freeride Open. The enthusiasm from both competitors and spectators was overwhelming, and Whitewater is looking forward to an even more exciting event this year with an expanded lineup of athletes from both disciplines.

Freeride Discipline
The essence of freeriding is self-expression. The venues use Whitewater’s natural terrain, encouraging riders to choose technical lines and demonstrate their style and creativity. This IFSA-accredited event scores competitors based on five categories: line choice, control, technique, fluidity, and style & energy.

The Venue
Whitewater Ski Resort is renowned as a freerider’s paradise, located beneath the stunning Ymir Peak. The resort boasts diverse terrain including chutes, cliffs, glades, and bowls, making it the ideal setting for riders to display their talents.
Sleeper – Qualifiers (January 10th & 11th)
A technical and steep run, Sleeper is a standout feature of the Smith Jr Freeride Open. Located directly off the Summit Chair, it presents wild cliff drops and soft, powder-filled pillows, offering competitors an exciting challenge right from the start.
Blast – Finals (January 12th)
Known as the quintessential Whitewater run, Blast is a thrilling venue where riders can demonstrate their abilities by sending massive airs off cliffs under the Summit Chair. This course is a crowd favourite as much of the run is visible from the base area and the chairlift, providing an incredible spectator experience.
