"The Fischer RC One GT 86 does exactly what it’s designed to do: serve as a stable rocket ship on piste. Thanks to its tenacious edge hold, it allowed confidence at the highest speeds, but the tail is not 100 per cent locked in, so speed checks were achievable with enough skier input. It was damp enough to bust through 10 centimetres of mashed-potato snow on groomed bed surface, but felt unwieldy in the steeps and deep pow, and was therefore not the most versatile ski of the bunch. But if you have the need for speed on wide-open corduroy, then the RC One is your huckleberry." —Michael Cattie

Age: 37 / Height: 5’9” / Weight: 135 lbs / Occupation: Wildland Firefighter
The lone wolf on the periphery of our pack, Michael Cattie hails from the noble state of Delaware, where he grew up as Joe Biden’s neighbour, but now resides just over Rogers Pass from Revelstoke, in Golden. As a highly selective ski collector, he has a personal quiver of 11 pairs in his garage, which his friends often refer to as “a problem.” A former ski patroller and ski tech, he’s given all that up to be a wildland firefighter for Parks Canada in the summer, and a full-time backcountry bloodhound in the winter. He still adores resort days at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, and is a slash-and- spray kind of skier who loves riding switch in pow. In-bounds, he prefers a flat ski with dual rocker, 110 millimetres of waist, and 186 centimetres of length.
