There’s two words that summarize the redesigned Salomon QST 106 when those two skis are under your two boots. Daily. Driver. As a fairly critical powder snob, I don’t have a set of skis in my quiver under 108-millimetres underfoot… and those are my rock skis. But the QST completely changed the game for me and won all facets a ski test can have. The wide shovel allowed me to float through 25-centimetres of snow and dig in for face shots. Its stiff tail gave me no chatter in the chop. And the sturdy underfoot acted like a 98-millimetre ski when conditions were icy and things got dicey. This ski railed groomers, ate up the chunder, darted through trees en route to open chutes, and floated on that sweet pow-pow to keep me on the mow-mow from bell-to-bell on days that might typically be a late start or early finish. For east coasters, it may not be your do-it-all ski, but if you’re a west coast freeride skier who sees every type of condition nature throws at you, I dare you to try this ski and not fall in love. —Jack Lesnik
