The Salomon QST 98 is a lightweight, manoeuvrable and reliable all-mountain ski that excelled in a wide variety of terrain and conditions. On the hard pack, it held a strong edge, even on firm, borderline icy groomers, and was quick to transition turns at both low and high speeds, which made it a pleasure to ski fast. In softer snow, I found I could take this ski anywhere with ease, as it was responsive and lively, with an easy pivot point in the softer, tapered tip that made steep, tight and technical terrain a joy to navigate, while its stiffer tail provided added stability when speed picked up. And while I personally prefer something wider on pow days, the QST 98 would be ideal for someone who’s looking for a ski that can carve with the best of them on the groomed, but still come alive on soft snow in off-piste terrain. —JAY MALONEY
