The Atomic Backland 109 is a light, stable, touring-focused ski that performed as enjoyably as I expected it to. It has a soft and absorbing tip, responsive waist and stiff tail that allowed for critical turn control when I needed it most. This ski floated and carved through fresh snow with ease, and inspired confidence once slough started following me down some of the tighter terrain features I tested it in. On groomed runs, it carved incredibly well with solid edge-to-edge transitions, and on the few runs that I encountered moguls, its soft tip absorbed the majority of the impact and I was able to ski at my regular pace without any negative side effects. I can't wait to spend more time on this ski where it belongs—in the backlands. —Mike Flood
