Mark Abma has become one of freeskiing’s foremost voices and veterans. Since erupting onto the scene in 2003, the Pemberton, British Columbia-based 39-year-old has spent the past 16 years refusing to slow down by appearing in some of the most timeless movies in modern ski film history. Along the way, Abma has aimed to be kind to the planet and encourage other skiers to do the same by establishing himself as an early adopter of environmental stewardship—and led by example. First by converting his diesel-powered truck to run on vegetable oil, then by constructing an off-grid geodesic dome (which you can learn all about in an article by the man himself in our next issue, and an upcoming video profile). He’s also dropped in with Protect Our Winters Canada, and his latest initiative, Elevation Collective, a real estate development company that designs and creates sustainable buildings.
Because Abma is such an admirable badass, for our first contest of the season, we’ve partnered with him and Smith Optics, the legendary eyewear brand that uses sustainable materials in its products and has been supporting Abma since the start of his illustrious career. Up for grabs: a set of Smith’s all-new 4D MAG goggles, which comes equipped with BirdsEye Vision, a state-of-the-art lens technology that offers a 25 per cent increase in field of view in comparison to their iconic I/O MAG goggles.
To enter, show Abma your love for Mother Earth by uploading a photo or video of you doing something sustainable to Instagram, then follow and tag @markabma, @smithoptics and @forecastski in your post along with the hashtag #greenwithabma. Abma will then scroll through the entries himself to select the winner, which we’ll announce before the snow starts to fly. Good luck!
